Grotto Beach, one of the few Blue Flag beaches in the Western Cape, is just a five-minute drive away, and the Hermanus Golf Course is only 5km from us.

Activities
Whale Watching Boat Trip
Boat-based tours in Hermanus provide one of the best ways to witness the migration of Southern Right Whales in their natural environment. Departing from New Harbour, the purpose-built catamaran allows visitors to approach whales up to 50 meters away. A whale specialist guide accompanies each tour, and light refreshments are included. Visitors can take home souvenir DVDs of the trip. Weather-appropriate clothing, sunscreen, and sea-sickness tablets are recommended. Trip duration can vary from 1.5 to 3 hours, with 20 minutes spent with each pod of whales. Daily departures are scheduled at 09h00, 12h00, and 15h00 from June/July to early December, weather permitting.
Shark Cage Diving
Looking for an adrenaline rush? Head to Gansbaai, (Kleinbaai) 40 minutes from Hermanus, for a once-in-a-lifetime shark cage diving experience. Safe, thrilling, and unforgettable!

Sea Kayaking
Explore the stunning coastline and marine life up close with a sea kayaking tour. Led by an experienced guide, visitors can glide through the sparkling water while taking in the majestic mountain, sea cliffs, and wildlife. The tour departs from the historic Old Harbour for a round trip, direction dependent on winds, swells, and paddling abilities. The tour operates in a Marine Reserve where whales are protected, and sightings of seals, penguins, and cormorants are guaranteed. Perception Tribe sea kayaks are provided, and the tour guides are qualified in marine guiding and first aid at sea. The tour lasts for 2 hours, and no prior kayaking experience is necessary.
Quad Biking
The Quad Bike Trail in Hermanus is a top-rated adventure trail in South Africa, featured in movies, commercials, and travel agent itineraries. You don’t need prior experience as experienced guides lead you through an easy to moderate Fynbos farm trail for an unforgettable experience. Start from the base camp and enjoy a scenic drive on new bikes, passing the Honingklip Dam and gradually ascending up the mountains with some of the best views on the trail. Follow safe distance and speed limits and undergo a short safety drive for comfort on the longer trail ahead. Capture the panoramic views of the entire bay and Botriver Lagoon on this must-do adventure!
Cliff Path
The famous Hermanus cliff path winds 12 km from the New Harbour to the Klein River mouth, offering spectacular ocean views along the way. Surrounded by lush fynbos and birdlife, it’s one of our favourite walks. From our guest house, it takes about 1½ hours to reach Grotto Beach — where we love to enjoy lunch at Dutchies before catching a taxi back. Keep an eye out for whales, dolphins, and seals! On your way, stop by Ficks Pool for a refreshing drink with a stunning sea view.
Wine Tours
Discover Hermanus’ stunning wine valley, home to 22 wineries, 15 tasting rooms, over 120 award-winning wines, and 5 fantastic lunchtime restaurants amidst breathtaking mountainous scenery. Experience some of the best food & wine pairings in the Cape. Take a wine tour in an air-conditioned minibus with an accredited Cape Wine Academy Tour Guide, or let the Wine Hopper pick you up from our guest house. Full day wine tours run every day. Reservations for lunch are required.
Bettys Bay Penguins
Situated between Hermanus and Cape Town, at Betty’s Bay, is Stony Point Nature Reserve – home to roughly 3 600 African Penguins, it’s one of the largest successful breeding colonies of African Penguins in the world.
This thriving African Penguin colony is undoubtedly the most sought-after attraction and top reason to visit this incredible Cape Nature Reserve.
It’s less touristy than Boulders Beach and a fraction of the cost. In fact – you don’t even need to pay to see the penguins – only if you want to go on the boardwalk.
Fatbike Tours
Take your bike riding to a new level with our Fatbikes, boasting super-wide tires and providing the ultimate ride. Starting near the Grootbos nature reserve, the trail takes you on a narrow sandy horse trail through the Fynbos and down to the top of the Sand Dunes. The downhill section will have you picking up speed before you reach the top of the first vertical dune face. After a briefing on how to ride down the dune, you can choose to ride down the face or go around the side where the slope is gentler. The guide will be at the bottom, videoing your challenges, and teaching you how to slalom. The ride ends with a 4×4 trail down to the beach and a ride back up to the car park. The tour includes transport to the dunes, a guided tour, fat bike rental, hi-res photos of the tour, protective gear, and light refreshments.
Bay Cruises
Eco Cruises offers daily tours of Hermanus’ coastline on the Ocean Quest, providing informative talks on the area’s history and sightings of local wildlife such as Cape Fur Seals and African Penguins. With a 90-minute day cruise, or 2 hour sunset cruise this is perfect for families and couples seeking a relaxing way to take in the sights of Walker Bay and Hermanus, with soft drinks, water, and blankets available on board. Ocean Quest is a licensed commercial sailing vessel with an experienced crew adhering to safety regulations. Departure times are 8 am, 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, and 4 pm (summer months only).
Fernkloof Nature Reserve
Fernkloof Nature Reserve is a beautiful natural attraction situated in the coastal town of Hermanus, South Africa. Boasting 1800 hectares of diverse habitats including fynbos, forests, wetlands, and mountains, it houses over 1600 plant species and a variety of wildlife like baboons, dassies, and birds. A popular trail is the 10km Fernkloof Trail, which takes around 2 to 4 hours to complete and offers stunning views of the coast and town. There are also shorter trails available, picnic areas, and a Visitors Centre. Fernkloof Nature Reserve is perfect for hikers, nature lovers, and those looking for a peaceful retreat.
De Kelders
De Kelders Cave, situated in the small coastal town of De Kelders near Hermanus, is a fascinating archaeological site that offers visitors a unique glimpse into the history of the early inhabitants of the region. The cave, located on the coast overlooking Walker Bay, has been occupied by humans for over 100,000 years and has yielded a wealth of Stone Age artifacts, including the oldest known human footprints outside of Africa. Visitors can take a guided tour of the site, which includes a visit to the cave and a museum showcasing some of the artifacts. The cave’s stunning views and rich cultural significance make it a must-see destination in the Western Cape.
Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate
Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is a vineyard and winery located in the Walker Bay wine region, near Hermanus, South Africa. The estate covers over 70 hectares of land and produces a variety of award-winning wines, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Visitors can enjoy a variety of wine-tasting experiences, food and wine pairings, a restaurant, and a deli. The estate overlooks the Bot River Lagoon, with a boardwalk winding its way through the vineyards. Outdoor activities include hiking, kayaking, fishing, and a 9-hole golf/putt putt course.
Whale Walk Tours
Hermanus, a town in South Africa, offers a unique opportunity for whale watching tours from the shore. Guided Abalone Farm tours
Our locally endemic Cape Whale Coast abalone, Haliotis Midae, is a well-known delicacy in Asian restaurants. This stretch of coastline is considered the “heart” of abalone habitat.
Join our guided abalone farm tours at the Heart Shed venue, followed by a walk to one of the largest and oldest abalone farms in South Africa, Abagold, located at the New Harbour of Hermanus. During the tour, you will witness firsthand the impressive technical infrastructure required to keep 16,000,000 abalone healthy and happily housed in their 40,000 baskets for almost five years until they reach a marketable “cocktail size” of about 250 grams. You’ll also have the opportunity to view the construction of South Africa’s first-ever wave energy converter.
After the tour, satisfy your appetite with a tasting platter to experience the deliciousness of abalone.
Horse Trails
Escape to Heaven & Earth Horse Trails, located in the Hemel en Aarde Valley in Hermanus, offers a range of picturesque horseback riding experiences with stunning mountain views and vineyards. The Orchard Trail is perfect for beginners and families with young children, featuring a leisurely ride through beautiful surroundings, 30 minutes of pre-ride instruction, and a 60-minute ride. The Exclusive Trail offers private and individualized instruction during a 90-minute ride, accommodating all levels of experience. For an unforgettable experience, riders can choose The Bosman Frame House Wine Tasting Trail, which includes a 2.5-hour ride and wine tasting.
Penguin Sanctuary
The Penguin Sanctuary in Gansbaai is a conservation project aimed at protecting the African penguin population from extinction. Located in the Western Cape of South Africa, the sanctuary provides a safe haven for penguins that have been affected by oil spills, overfishing, and habitat loss. The sanctuary is also a breeding ground for penguins, where they can lay their eggs and raise their chicks in a protected environment. Visitors to the sanctuary can observe the penguins in their natural habitat, and learn about the importance of conservation efforts to preserve these unique and charismatic birds. The sanctuary also offers educational programs for school groups and tourists to raise awareness about penguin conservation.
Kite Surfing
Learn to Kitesurf with the help of our professionally trained IKO kitesurfing instructor who provides all necessary equipment, including the kite, kite control bar, kiteboard, and wetsuit. You only need to bring a towel, hat, sunscreen, swimming costume, and water, and the instructor will take care of the rest. Our one-on-one instruction using Bluetooth headsets ensures you learn the safest and best way to kitesurf during the 2-hour lesson. For those already experienced, we offer rental equipment for half-day or full-day use. Rentals range from a complete KITESURFING set to just a board or kite.
Panthera Africa
Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary, situated near Stanford, South Africa, is a unique wildlife sanctuary founded in 2014 by Lizaene Cornwall and Cathrine Nyquist. The sanctuary is home to lions, tigers, leopards, and cheetahs that have been rescued from abusive situations or orphaned. Panthera Africa offers guided tours, during which visitors learn about the individual stories of each big cat and the challenges facing these animals in the wild. Visitors can participate in an enrichment program and enjoy overnight stays, yoga classes, and meditation sessions. Panthera Africa works closely with local communities to promote sustainable tourism and environmental awareness.
Sand Boarding
Sandboarding, an exciting recreational activity similar to snowboarding, is enjoyed on large sand dunes instead of snow-covered mountains. Betty’s Bay, close to Cape Town, is home to one of Africa’s highest commercial sandboarding dunes. Guides offer training and safety tips, making it perfect for individuals, larger groups, or team-building events.
Beginners start with a smaller section and progress to higher levels as their skills improve. Participants can stand or sit on the sandboard while descending the dune. Comfortable clothes and shoes are recommended, and sunscreen and water are essential during summer sessions. Each session lasts approximately two hours.
Rain may affect sandboarding, so check with the operator on the day of your booking. If the weather is bad, you can reschedule or receive a refund.

The tour includes a stop at the Space Weather Centre, the SANSA Data and Engineering unit, the magnetically clean environment and the Science Centre.

Deep Sea Fishing Charters
Eco Cruises depart daily from Hermanus’ New Harbour, offering a relaxing and informative tour of the coastline. With the option of motor or sail (depending on weather conditions), the crew provides educational talks on the historical sites passed and Hermanus. Visitors can enjoy sightings of Cape Fur Seals and African Penguins throughout the year, while dolphins and Bryde’s Whales may also appear. The 90-minute cruise is ideal for families and couples, with blankets and drinks available. The licensed vessel follows South African Maritime Safety Authority regulations for guest and crew safety.
Scuba Diving
Join Ocean Quest’s daily 2-tank guided dive trip aboard their 36ft sailing catamaran, weather permitting. The first dive explores local reefs, abundant with coral and fish life, and sometimes curious seals. Afterward, enjoy refreshments while the boat moves to the second dive site in a shallow kelp forest, offering safe anchorage for the boat. Encounter macro life and small shark species like pyjama and shy shark, all while receiving personalized attention in a maximum group of six divers.
Cape Sidecar Adventures
Cape Sidecar Adventures is a unique and exciting way to explore Cape Town. The company offers guided tours on vintage sidecar motorcycles, allowing visitors to see the city’s top sights in style and comfort. The tours range from short rides around the city to full-day excursions that take in the stunning coastline and surrounding countryside. Paintball
The Hermanus Paintball field has been a popular destination for players, from bachelor parties to corporate bookings. They ensure a high-quality game by using only compressed air for their equipment, which increases its lifespan. Those who bring their own equipment need to ensure it’s compatible with compressed air. Due to high demand, bookings for the paintball field are essential and up to six games can be hosted per day. Braai facilities are available for an additional fee. Overalls are also provided for players over 16 for an extra cost.
Sky Diving
Skydiving in Cape Town offers a thrilling and unforgettable experience. The jump takes place from an altitude of around 9,000 feet, providing spectacular views of the Mother City and surrounding areas. After a 20-minute scenic flight, you will be securely harnessed to your experienced tandem instructor before taking the leap of faith. The freefall lasts for approximately 30 seconds, reaching speeds of up to 120 miles per hour, before the parachute is deployed for a gentle descent back to earth. With highly trained instructors and state-of-the-art equipment, skydiving in Cape Town is a safe and exhilarating adventure for adrenaline junkies.
Zipline Tour
Located in Hemel En Aarde valley, the tree top zipline extends from our mountain and zip lining over a small waterfall (when we have enough water) between the Poplar Trees and Canyon. This a memorable experience for any one from the age of 6 years and older. The Hermanus Tree Top Adventure Zipline Tours offer a unique experience with 12 platform slides ranging from 20 meters to 200 meters and with a safe breaking system you control the speed you travel at.
